About This Book

Torsten Wasastjerna (1863-1924) was a notable artist of the Golden Age of Finnish art. His key masterpieces date from the 1880s to the 1910s. He studied in Düsseldorf and Paris, making a gradual transition from realist landscapes to impressionism and symbolism. He is best known for his bold impressionist works from the 1890s, which have overshadowed his symbolist paintings and large-scale fantasy and myth-inspired work. These lesser-known pieces are highlighted in this book, which takes an analytical look at their content and ideological implications. The text was authored is Erkki Anttonen, PhD, who lectures in art history at the University of Helsinki. Exhibition: Villa Gyllenberg, Helsinki, Finland (11.05.-11.09.2022)
