About This Book

The story of the synagogue is told through the more than 300 postage stamps shown, plus over 100 special postal cancellations, mailed cachet covers, special postal cards and air letter sheets. Some of these cancellations accompanied synagogue bearing stamps while others represent the synagogue on their own. Many of the cancellations are pictorial and show the synagogues they commemorate. Some of the cancellations merely mention the synagogue and the reason it is being commemorated (i.e., 100th anniversary). Over 120 labels which are used as part of philatelic releases, plus over 60 B'nai B'rith First Day Cover Cachets, help to round out the picture of establishment, development, reaction and the role of the synagogue. Some 40 miscellaneous items include air letter sheets or prepaid postal cards.
