About This Book
This is an updated version of a 1901 report by the Boston Public Schools' Committee on Manual Training. It describes the activities leading up to the opening of Boston's Mechanic Arts High School in 1893 and depicts the physical layout of the original school building at Belvidere and Dalton Sts. in Boston's Back Bay section. The report also contains a description of the curriculum and contains photographs and drawings of the classrooms, workshops and equipment used by the students. Added to the original report are a list of the teaching staff and the graduates from 1896-1901, including their then current occupations. (NOTE: A large addition was made to the school buillding in 1909. Mechanic Arts High School was renamed Boston Technical High School in 1944. In 1960 the school moved to Boston's Roxbury section and in 1963 the original building was demolished. The school today (2011) is known as the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, one of three so-called examination schools in the Boston school system.)
