Olivier Messiaen, The Musical Mediator analyzer selected piano compositions of Olivier Messiaen with the aid of Jan LaRue's Guidelines for Style Analysis. It provides a guide for the interpretation and performance of the compositions, and for each composition gives pedagogical instruction under six headings: Rhythm, Phrasing/Slurring, Dynamics, Touch/Tone Production, Pedaling, and Technique.

It also offers background information on Messiaen's philosophy of music, particularly the religious, literary, visual, and musical experiences that affected his compositions.
