Philip Newell's focus in this book is the human soul and what it means to be truly alive. He draws on the treasury of Shakespeare's writing, but it is not primarily a literary study. Rather it is a way of pondering the mystery of our human nature, allowing Shakespeare's characters to be expressions of what is deepest in us. For only when we are true to our depths can we connect to what is most profound in others and in all things.
