About This Book

This is a valuable history of the Woodgate family who lived in the Tonbridge area of Kent from the Middle Ages down to the 19th century, and also of several related families. It was written by two members of the family at the beginning of the 20th century. They had access to an enormous quantity of family documents. On the other hand they did not have the easy access which a modern scholar would have to public documents such as Land Tax and parish overseers' records, the tithe award maps or even to the census. The authors appear to have misread certain place names, for instance Sibord's Meads in Chiddingstone is surely Silcock's Mead. The internal organization of the book is at times hard to follow, but the family trees are excellent.
