Drawing on both her own experience, and the memories of her surviving parent and siblings, Cherise Pereira (nee van Eyck) has compiled an incident-rich account of how her father grew up, left home, came back and met his wife, raised his family, and by his life-style, and sometimes authoritarian manner, inspired her.

"As his daughter, if I had to use only one word to describe my father, Carl Van Eyck, the word would be 'honest.' To use one of his own expressions, he was "wholly, totally, entirely, utterly, completely and 'abso-bally-lutely'" honest in all his dealings, in word and deed, with everyone alike - sometimes brutally so. Yet,he had friends who valued his candour and were as frank with him.
