About This Book
Includes 5 letters between Voltaire and Jean Pierre Biord, Bishop of Annecy-Geneva, Apr. 11-May 2, 1768, beginning with the bishop's rebuke of Voltaire's impiety at Easter, and a letter to Biord from Louis Phelypeaux, comte de Saint-Florentin, June 13, 1768.
Besides the correspondence, contains a certificate concerning Voltaire's philanthropic activities in Ferney, dated April 28, 1768, inserted between Voltaire's letter of April 29, which mentions it, and Biord's third letter; Voltaire's request to the curate of Ferney, dated Mar. 30, 1769, to receive communion in his domicile because of the state of his health; declarations of Mar. 31 and Apr. 1, 1769, on his having received the communion; and a document titled in the original "Profession de foi de M. de Voltaire," dated April 15, 1769, falsely ascribed to Voltaire by the curate of Ferney, Pierre Gros. See BN/BnF (cited above); Bengesco, G. Voltaire, t. 3, page 49.
