I have read the book... My (memory) notes tell me, I read it in (maybe) 1968... The book changed my (view of) life. The key idea of the narrator "Cúdar" was simply this... He would never ask anyone questions about who they were nor where they were from. He would wait... until they told him...

I adopted this philosophy for my entire life...
