About This Book

About the book: This book pursued the interface between economic reform and democracy in Nigeria especially during the Fourth Republic. It noted that economic reform for national development in the country has rather been undermining democracy. The realities of this have derived from limited institutionalization of public power in the country; a concomitant of the processes of comprador development so far experienced. The book examined these in the context of the declines in human rights; shrinking of the democratic space; limited capacities for resolving social conflicts and violence as well as growing authoritarianism evident in electoral declines and low mobilization impetus of the public policy process. Issues relating to privatization and commercialization; poverty alleviation and their institutional correlates had been examined. The study purposes the effective and diligent pursuit of democratization of social life in Nigeria as the panacea.
