About This Book

Twenty-five years after the creation of the Natura 2000 Network, the situation of the wetlands in Galicia continues to grow. The number of spaces declared as humid international importance is reduced to 5 spaces, which are probably one sixth, the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. The percentage is much lower in relation to other Autonomous Communities, with other territories of the European Union.

In addition, the Galician humidifiers, independent of their inclusion or not in a protected natural space figure, continue to record important hobbies (rozas, bleeds, eucalyptus plantations, exotic species expansion, diffuse pollution, use of lead ammunition, leisure activities and unsustainable recreations, etc.), in most cases contrary to the management rules governing these spaces.

The LIFE + Tremedal project (Inland wetlands of Northern Iberian Peninsula: management and restoration of mires and wet environments, LIFE11 NAT / ES / 000707) wants to contribute to the protection of the wetlands of Galicia, presenting different aspects about its biodiversity, as well as problems about its conservation, management and use, counting on it with the participation of different specialists in the fields of ecology, botany and zoology of wetlands. The analysis presented here should serve as a revulsive to society and especially to the territorial managers in need of abandoning the old irrational policies of exploitation of the territory, promoting a change of paradigm in its management in accordance with the objectives established in the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Development Goals Sustainable.
