About This Book

Typographer Juan Pablos (Giovanni Paoli, Ioanes Paulus Bressensis, Ioa. Pau. Brisse; b. Bresca, Italy - d. 1561?) was the first printer established in Mexico and the first printer on the American continent. Pablos was employed in Jacome (Juan) Cromberger's press in Seville, Spain and arrived in Mexico in 1539 where he became the exclusive publishing house in Nueva España for the next decades. This carefully edited edition is a well researched and beautifully illustrated study dedicated to the typography and iconography of the first imprints produced by the Juan Pablos press along with an historic account of the resources and technical challenges faced by the pioneer publisher house. The book is accompanied by technical notes by Juan Pascoe, author of numerous studies on colonial Mexican printing houses.
