About This Book

This two volume set includes reproductions of the compiler's selected Nagasaki paintings. Each reproduction has an annotation by the compiler. These explanations involve many topics, e.g., the painter, the background of the painting's contents, and the influence of western art on that paintings. For many years, Nagasaki was the only port into which foreigners could go. Thus, cultural exchange produced a special sort of Japanese art.
