The road to Guadalupe

Photographer Hanut pays an only partially irreverent visit to the Basilica of Guadalupe, after the Vatican the second most visited Catholic shrine in the world, intertwining his travel narrative with a version of the story of Mary's apparition to Juan Diego in 1531 based on the oldest known manuscript. He discusses modern spirituality and commercialism surrounding the shrine and the Saint, ranging from the tilma, the cloak on which bears an image of the Virgin, to brujeria, the mix of Catholicism with surviving Aztec religious practices.
