About This Book

The volume, which has Lucinda D. Orne's name and the date October 12, 1826 written on the first page, contains manuscript copies of the following three addresses: The hope of our country, a poem delivered at Cambridge to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, August 31, 1826 by William Bourn Oliver Peabody, a poem delivered before the PBK Society, August 29, 1822 by Oliver William Bourn Peabody and a poem delivered at the New Hampshire centennial celebration at Portsmouth, May 21, 1823 by Oliver William Bourn Peabody. None of the poems are attributed within the volume. The relationship between Orne and the Peabodys is unclear; however, it appears that Peabody was the minister of the Unitarian church of which the Ornes were members, and Orne presumably received and copied the text of the poems from William.
