Human Rights or Global Capitalism

Global market forces are neither able nor willing to take responsibility for the effective realization of universal human rights, but they also increasingly constitute powerful threats to human rights which often exceed the traditional violations of human rights committed by state actors. Universal human riaghts can only be realized if economic forces are effectively controlled by political decision makers, whether on the national, regional, or global level. We, therefore, need a fundamental change toward a system of global governance that is able and willing to effectively regulate global markets and to take the political obligations toward respecting, protecting, and fulfilling human rights seriously."--Page 176.
