Paul Sinclair is a young physician who is in a practice in Glasgow. He has become disillusioned with life in the city and his wife, Heather, is urging him to find a new practice. She arranges an interview and Paul travels to Gloucestershire to sound out the opportunity. The new practice is affluent but there are disturbing features. He accepts the position.His new older partners, Richard and Elizabeth McLeod, are husband and wife. Elizabeth is much younger than her husband and is attracted to Paul. She intimates very strongly that she would be open to an affair. The situation changes when Dr. Maureen McLeod, Richard's estranged daughter by his first wife, arrives home. She has been physically abused and Paul treats her injuries. Maureen is depressed and Paul takes her out to dine at the insistence of her father.Maureen is upset later to find that Paul is married with a child. Paul's wife, Heather, is attracted to Maureen.A compromise is worked out whereby they set up a menage a trois. Maureen becomes pregnant and decides to keep the baby. Her father suffers a heart attack at the news and is taken to the hospital. Elizabeth forces Paul to leave his home and live at her house. Richard condition worsens and he is found to have widespread cancer. He comes home to die.Elizabeth arranges for Richard to put his affairs in order. Maureen unsuccessfully tries to help her father to die but her step-mother intervenes. Elizabeth still has issues with her husband that she wants resolved before he dies. Later, Elizabeth discovers that Richard has been concealing the truth about the death of their only son.Paul finds that his life is taking a different path and tries a desperate remedy.
