The funtion of this book is to show familiar peasants "in position," as it were, neither frustrated idealists nor clowns, but human beings expressing the common human needs and feelings in the language inevitable to their circumstance ; their lives influenced, not so greatly by love as by work, their most axalted types reaching their highest articulation in religion.
