About This Book

This book is a much quoted omnibus book describing the state of Sonora, Mexico. It covers matters such as the state's: geography, topography, hydrological and mineral resources. It has a rather extended description of mining districts and practices (particularly, gold and silver mines). It also describes: (1) the indian tribes of the State and their customs and languages, (2) the other inhabitants (i.e. the Spanish and other European colonizers), their customs, economic activities and relationships with the Indians.
Mr. de Velasco was a Federal and State legislator. He was a member of the 1st congress of Mexico after its independence. Similarly,he was one of the 1st delegates to the state legislature when the state gained independence. In fact, he helped write the first state constitution. As a side note, Mr. de Velasco was the first person to recognize as meteorites the "Tucson and/or Ring" meteorites which are now in the Smithsonian Institute.
