About This Book

The book shows the works of the Upper Austrian State Gallery's Art Brut Collection. This collection was put together in 2011 and comprises around 60 works of artists with cognitive and mental impairments. In the year 2017, these works were facsimiled and made available to the public in the permanent exhibition "Kunst Sammlung" in the portico of the so called "Economic Wing" of Hartheim Castle. The portico, dating back to the 17th century, offers a very special place for the artworks. In the summer of 2017, we could realize a unique spacial concept together with 19 artists with impairments: on lifting platforms and scaffolds, partly working overhead and using telescope bars and equipment for theater painting, the artists painted and drew on the portico ceiling and the sidewalls. The immediacy of the wall drawings and paintings amplifies the collection's presentation in an unparalleled way by bringing the creative power of the artists to the spectator's mind. Under this heaven, visitors of the art collection are invited to behold the artworks of the Art Brut Collection which are presented on tables under glass. For viewing of the portico ceiling, hand mirrors are provided, thus offering "heavenly" insights.
