For about 25 years of the reign of Emperor Augustus, the northern border of the Roman Empire on the Rhine Feldzüge was guided in the Germanic area to Weser and Elbe. It was a time of military subjugation, Germanic revolt, contractual commitments, and finally also the beginning of Romanization. The Varus Battle with the demise of three legions in 9 AD meant for the Central, Northern and North-West Germany the abrupt end of the development towards a new Roman province of Germania magna.
