The fifth publication in the 'ONTO' series focuses on the core of architecture and architectural design, spatiality in particular: the qualitative and quantitative demarcation of space in relation to its broader spatial context. We are introduced to this concept through the first year 'initiate design' studio, the best place to discover how spatiality is at the core of design criteria, skills and methodologies. Using the perspective of a fledgling student this part of the series gives an intimate look into the search of how and why we design architecture. The shaky first forays into architectural design are shown through portfolio clippings. They invite the reader to take part in the open-minded, exploratory first steps that are at the base of architectural design. The concluding essay by educational philosopher Jan Masschelein regards the first year studio as a place of creation of and for study, and by extend an educational biotope par excellence. 0.
