About This Book
In 1860 Aasmund Olavsson Vinje is a 42 year old journalist based in Oslo editing his own publication Dølen. In June he sets out on a travel from Oslo, then Christiania, to Trondheim to report on the crowning of king Karl IV. Using available transport means he travels north through the eastern valleys, over the mountains, returning by September partly by ship down the west coast. Ferdaminni fraa Sumaren 1860 (A remembrance of a voyage in the summer of 1860) was first published as two special editions of Dølen in 1861. The book is not really a travel story, instead it is a compilation of essays, poems, anecdotes, short biographies of people he met, also debating social issues. Written at a time when Norway was to transform from a horse and cart society to railroad and steam, industrialization and urbanization, Vinje took a critical and often witty look at the "old ways" of the agrarian communities he encountered.
The book is regarded as one of the major works in Norwegian literature. It was for years a standard on the curriculum in Norwegian schools.
