About This Book
Text of a statement before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on the Far East and the Pacific, January 27, 1966. The author addresses the question of U.S. interests in Asia on a broad, regional level. The two sides of U.S. interests are considered: (1) prevention of a domination of Asia by a single power, or by a group of powers, whose hostility and capabilities might constitute a direct or indirect threat to the United States; and (2) the assistance of Asian countries toward economic modernization as open and stable societies. Also considered are widely held beliefs about current American policies and programs in Asia, and a particular approach toward building collaboration and contacts among the Asian countries.
