About This Book

The Occident, antithesis of the Orient, means the West, lands of the setting sun. 'Occideia' depicts one subject?s odyssey, a chimerical trek through a culture-moulded environment. Occideia is a story built up in small episodes. A story with a beginning and end, birth and death. Intermittent events and phenomena tell about us people and our culture. In his photographs, Olli Oinas focused on sequences of black and white images of everyday and unimportant places. The result was soul landscapes, where idea and visual highlighting together build the content and power of the image. The work 'Occideia' by Olli Oinas (1948?2018) appears posthumously. The texts of the book have been selected from diary entries, where he considered the importance of art and culture in general and photography in particular.
