About This Book
This article demonstrates the deplorable conditions aboard vessels transporting fishermen from Saint-Malo, France to Saint-Pierre in 1907, despite the fact inspections were required before the ships were permitted to leave port. There was a lack of medical supplies, the sleeping quarters were cramped and unsanitary, and food was of very poor quality and supply, leaving the author to question the enforcement of the rules already in place that were meant to protect the fishermen on board ships leaving France, and whether new laws that were to be enacted would be just as futile.
