During World War I, Panstingl was an officer of the Austrian Army. Captured by the Russians, he became separated from his fellow prisoners. He couldn't head home east, as that would require passing through most of the War. Assuming the identity of an American Naval officer (with forged documents) he traveled west through Russia, visited Japan and eventually found transport back to Europe via the Dutch East Indies. *In Maske Durch den Fernen Osten* relates the true story of his escape and journey home.
