About This Book
The Annual Housing Survey is conducted each year and statistics provided in this file focus on characteristics of the housing inventory of the United States. A nation-wide sample is taken of housing units and their characteristics as well as demographic information about the inhabitants. The universe consists of a sample of approximately 78,600 housing units selected from the 1970 Census of Population and Housing records and updated by a sample of addresses from building permits to include new construction and conversions. Data include the year the structure was built, the type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, access, presence of commercial or medical establishments on the property, and property value. Additional data focus on physical characteristics of the structure. There are statistics concerning housing expenses such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, and insurance costs and property taxes. Data on each member of the household includes age, sex, race, marital status, and relationship to the head of household. Also included are the years of schooling, Spanish origin and length of residence for each person. Income sources are identified including wages, rent, farm and non-farm income, investments, social security, pensions, alimony and child support, unemployment and workman's compensation and veteran's payments.
