About This Book

This book is a tribute to the true believers who continued working with draught horses between 1945 and 1970. When the draught horse disappeared a breed of men went with them. Born and bred into the working-horse world their ancestors knew not only how to work horses but to tend to their husbandry needs. Accumulated knowledge was passed down (often within families) through the generations as an oral tradition. Many of the stories contained in this book have a common thread of respect between man and beast. For this reason the Clydesdale has stayed with us. While the hard labour of working six days a week, often from sun up to sun down no longer exists, the Clydesdale does. Our history with these horses lives on by way of working Field Days, in which the old principles of farming are applied, if only for a brief moment.
