About This Book

A survey and performance-cost analysis was made of available high density magnetic storage devices. The study emphasized the analysis of peripheral equipment which is IBM or UNIVAC compatible because of the current importance of this equipment in the Navy as replacements for IBM and UNIVAC peripheral units. The survey considered magnetic tapes, drums, discs and mass storage devices. Based on manufacturer specifications significant performance-cost differences were identified in favor of independent manufacturers of peripheral equipment. In the case of magnetic tapes, there are insignificant performance differences among units; however, significant cost differences do exist. In the case of disc and drum units, there are significant differences in both performance and cost among manufacturers and within certain manufacturer product lines.
