My first reader, 1961, Fenside Drive Public School, Toronto, Grade 1. The excruciatingly tedious 'adventures' of the brain-dead Sandy, his sister Susan, their dog Cookie, and their Mother and Father, whom the children invariably address as "Mother" and "Father". Realistic, yes? Even as a semi-literate six year old, I remember being bored to distraction.
