A Jewish boy, Vidal, whose family was expelled from Spain, must survive alone on an island and hope a ship will rescue him. At the same time, his parents escape Portugal--before king Manoel accepts the Inquisition--to Salonika, his brother is with other children on an unknown island, and his grandfather in Amsterdam mounts an expedititon.--
