About This Book
The Subsistence Agriculture Study Group (SASG) at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, was established as a sub-committee of the Research Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1979. Its essential function was to co-ordinate the research activities of members of different departments in the Faculty who were interested in questions having to do with subsistence agriculture. In order to attain a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach and to incorporate socio-economic aspects in the research programmes, SASG extended its membership to the Development Studies Research Group (DSRG) and to other departments within the University. Public and private organizations which were engaged in development work were also invited to participate.
