from the beginning of European settlement up to 1986. In this year the N.Z. Police celebrated
100 years of existence as a civilian law enforcement body. The first police to work in New Zealand were a Sergeant and four mounted troopers from the N.S.W. Mounted Police who accompanied Captain William Hobson in H.M.S. Herald arriving at Waitangi on 29 Jan.1840.
