About This Book
Not a book, but one of two analytical cover stories written about a year apart for the War/Peace Report at its request.
The first article examined the 1965-66 Indonesian upheaval that led over several months to the deposing of the nation's first president, Sukarno, and succession of Gen.Soeharto to power, and the conflicting theories of its origins and prime movers.
The second article examined the challenges Gen.Soeharto subsequently faced and prospects ahead. The author had been UPI bureau chief in Jakarta in 1962-63 and returned to cover the crisis the weekend it broke out Oct.1, 1965. He wrote the articles after reassignment fall 1966 as UPI Asia correspondent at the United Nations in New York.
