Inspired by Stuart Hall's essay "What is this 'Black' in Black popular culture?" this book contains essays and interviews which explore the complexities of Black popular culture with a focus on the history that has led to this point. Highlighting the challenge Black popular culture must negotiate as it contends with white consumerism and the white gaze, this book emphasizes the cultural changes of the last quarter century and their impacts.
