About This Book

"The Cathode Ray Tube Memory of the High Speed Electronic Computer of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences" by V. N. Laut and L. A. Lyubovich, 1960 (English translation) is a detailed report on the internal CRT storage unit "VZU" of the "BESM" computer.

Research findings, block diagrams, some schematic diagrams, graphs, and waveforms, as well as excellent photographs are included. The book is a friendly read for those familiar with CRTs and possessing a high level of technical knowledge, even on this most complex and special subject matter.

The specially designed "Potentialscope" CRTs type LN-1 are of the barrier-grid type. At first look, they seem to share some aspects of 'Williams' tubes in regard to peripheral support electronics, but are shown to be an advancement over the former.

The Potentialscope is compared in a pro/con manner to ordinary low-cost oscilloscope tubes (by inference "Williams Tubes"), and special CRTs with internal regeneration. The construction and operation of the Potentilscope CRT is described.

Other information about this CRT memory includes circuit for each binary digit, the unit (equipment) for each digit, deflection, control, interconnection, testing, structural design, an experiences/conclusions. There is a good bibliography and complete index.

This is not a book of instructions, but rather a report on the requirements and performance of a well-designed CRT memory using barrier-grid tubes. Nonetheless, the accomplished hobbyist and the engineer alike will find it a valued addition to their library.

The 90 pages of this volume are equivalent to a larger volume due to a high information ratio and concise writing for understanding.
