The way home is longer

The Way Home Is Longer tells the story of the Brooklyn Dodgers' 1947 season, Jackie Robinson's rookie year, through the eyes of a fictional batboy named Vince Stigiano. The Brooklyn batboy is coming of age, taking care of his widowed mother and enjoying the first romantic love of his life while, all the while, he has a bird's eye view of American history being made: the breaking of baseball's color line.
