About This Book

"Artists in Iowa: The First Century stems from decades of research by art historian Dr. Lea Rosson DeLong and the more than 40 years of work by University Museums at Iowa State University to continue and preserve the dedication to the arts on Iowa State University's campus; this publication finally brings the neglected history of art in Iowa to light. From its inception, University Museums has endeavored to protect and continue the legacy of patronage and support for the arts and artists of Iowa that began in earnest on campus during the first half of the 20th century; Artists in Iowa: The First Century is the latest in this effort. Artists in Iowa: The First Century is an introductory history of art produced in the state from the 1830s (prior to Iowa statehood in 1846) until just past World War II. This publication is inspired in part by the 1939 book by Zenobia B. Ness and Louise Orwig, Iowa Artists of the First Hundred Years, which was a listing of more than 700 artists who had worked in the state. Artists in Iowa: The First Century demonstrates that art hsa been a significant expression in the history of the state, despite the popular concept that Iowa is more important for corn than for culture. Agriculture and art, however, are both found abundantly within Iowa, and this publication explores overlaps and layers, both for cultivation and civilization"--Page 4 of cover.
