About This Book

Biography of an outstanding New Zealand woman who was active in the 1960s and 70s, and her contribution to various sections of society, in particular the development of the Labour Party's social policy. A speech she wrote in 1968 is reproduced here in its entirety and is the most powerful part of the book. Marjorie's life was characterised by modesty and simplicity, as well as a sharp focus on the issues she cared about, such as social justice. The practice of social work was still in its infancy when she graduated and she fought for changes in social policy, particularly with regard to attitudes towards women. Includes photographs.
