About This Book
Translation of the Icelandic saga of Grettir the Strong, who spends nearly 20 years as an outlaw in medieval Iceland. His enemies include not only the families of those he has killed (sometimes accidentally) but ghosts, monsters, and sorcery as well. There are parallels with the Old English epic poem *Beowulf* and a number of supernatural and folklore elements. Grettir is the strongest man ever in Iceland, but is also hampered by his fear of the dark; he is loyal to his friends, but betrayed by some that he trusts. In the end, it is the kinship group that is the most important, as his brothers stand by him to the end, the last of them having his own romance as he avenges Grettir.
