This novel tells the story of one family's life in Leith through the dark and difficult years of the Second World War. Rachel Campbell wants a better life for herself and her four children but her husband Johnny isn't helping. When he finally deserts her, Rachel is left to fend for herself and her children through the dangers of wartime.
