This book focuses on the analysis of three discursive characteristics that exist in all languages: indirectness, hedging / mitigation and evidentiality, to which we add a brief note on Galician retranca or irony. The aim is to relate these four discursive traits to the stereotyped image of Galician communicative style, a stereotype born outside Galicia. From the point of view of intercultural pragmatics, we will try to show that this image is distorted by the prism from which we are observed. Many cultural groups integrate the first three linguistic characteristics in their communicative practices without receiving the stereotypical connotations attributed to the Galician speaker.
