About This Book
This volume is a work of reference intended to cover all transcriptions of British and Irish secular inventories published from 1721 to 2009. The volume lists more than 12,300 transcriptions, ordered first by date and then by location within county, with references to a substantial bibliography of more than 900 entries. In addition, there are extensive indexes of names, locations, trades, professions, titles and institutions. The inventories in the list range from 1278 to 1864, with a preponderance in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and are mainly English, though numerous Scottish, Welsh and Irish examples, and a smattering from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, are also included. They throw light on the furnishings and artefacts used in the grandest palaces and in the humblest of peasant dwellings, and include the odd Masonic lodge, college and livery company.
