About This Book
The Survey of Inmates of Local Jails, 1983 data were collected by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The respondents were selected from a universe of 3,600 institutions housing 190,000 male and 13,000 female inmates. The sample included 400 institutions, 4,300 male and 1,800 female inmates. The survey consists of information regarding socioeconomic characteristics and demographics of respondents, previous military service, prior criminal history, jail activities, drug and alcohol use, health care, and current offenses.
