About This Book

"There are few publications on Afghan music research coming from Afghanistan itself. This book is an exception, since its contents are not only the result of a symposium that took place at Kabul University, Kabul/ Afghanistan, in November 2014, but several of its contributions have been written by Afghan music scholars and musicology students, together with articles written by authors form Germany, Austria, and Turkey ... The book explores the contemporary role of music in the Afghan society. It discusses the status of women in Afghan music, traditional musical instruments and finally the quest of music as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Important topics in this respect are the safeguarding and measures to keep important archives in terms of a digitized heritage that remains accessible for generations to come. The book is also an outcome of the cooperation between the UNESCO Chair on Transcultural Music Studies of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Germany, and institutions in Afghanistan, primarily the Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM), Kabul University and Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA)"--
