Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), as well as being a sculptor, architect, and painter of genius, was a poet and letter-writer of remarkable accomplishment. This selection of his letters and poetry also includes the Life, the biography written by Michelangelo's pupil, Ascanio Condivi. Many of the letters are to famous contemporaries such as Vasari and Duke Cosimo, and they are characterized by unaffected directness. The poems explore, among other subjects, Michelangelo's attitudes towards his art, including the painting of the Sistine Chapel. They are dynamic, intense, resonant, and unpredictable in an age when the lyric was, by and large, conventional and elegant in the Petrarchan style. The poet Peter Porter has worked with the distinguished translator George Bull to render the poems into vigorous contemporary English.
