About This Book
Starting from 1942, the Italian eastern border was the scene of a violent anti-partisan repression. The protagonists were the men of the General Inspectorate of Public Security, who contributed to spread terror throughout the region. It was not a sudden and impromptu violence, but the extreme result of a consummate experience gained in the field. In the thirties, in fact, many of them had already been part of bodies that had effectively opposed the Sicilian Mafia and the Sardinian banditry. These were special police bodies, which the fascist regime had created on the model of contemporary structures of political investigation such as the Ovra, but of which we could find precedents already in the Great War and in the late liberal age. It was precisely in these circumstances that began to form that small group of specialists who, between utopias of order and personal ambitions, in the course of political upheavals of thirty years they were able to impose themselves as recognized professionals in the sector. After the collapse of fascism, in fact, despite a history of compromise with the regime, we will find them once again in Sicily, to face the renewed emergency of public order.--
