The girl in the case

Jimmy Pepperton is the editor of the financial page of the Oshkazoo Daily Dispatch, a position which is deemed insufficiently remunerative by the wealthy father of his fiancee, Gwennie Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong forbids the relationship, prompting Pepperton to engage in a series of increasingly elaborate financial operations that fatten his bank account and embarrass his future father-in-law.
