About This Book

In addition to Finnish and Swedish speakers, Sámi speakers have been interviewed--representatives of the traditional minority languages and the largest new language groups. The subjects include people of different ages with different educational backgrounds and living in different parts of Finland. On the basis of this diverse material, the linguistic spectrum and recent history of contemporary Finland are analyzed. Contemporary Finnish multilingualism is examined from several perspectives: the language choices of multilingual individuals in everyday life, the linguistic situations of Swedish-speaking Finns, the language strategies of multilingual parents in the family, and the reverse language exchange and return to childhood. The relationship between the interviewees' own mother tongue, Finnish and other languages is important.
